About Sepon
Sepon is an open-pit and underground Gold and Copper mine in Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. Lane Xang Minerals Limited Company (LXML) is the registered name of the company which owns and operates Sepon. Chifeng Jilong Gold Mining Co., Ltd owns 90 per cent of LXML and 10 per cent owns by Lao Government.
Since operations commenced in 2003, LXML Sepon has produced over 1.1 million tonnes of copper cathode and over 2 million ounces of gold. In 2023, Sepon produced 6,189 tonnes of copper and 6,021 Kg of gold. In 2024, our planned production forecast is over 6.20 tonnes of gold and 5,305 tonnes of copper, LXML has contributed over US$1.7 billion in direct revenue to the Lao Government through taxes, royalties and dividends. Indirect benefits through employment, training, community, and local business development programs have also contributed significantly to social and economic development in the Lao PDR.

Recently LXML conducted Supervisor Training - People Safety Module for all LXML supervisors. This training demonstrated LXML commitment to continually develop our supervisors and provide them with necessary skills to perform their roles. The training provided supervisors with Creating Safe Work Model, pre-start meeting and feedback skills. This module consists of a training workshop and practical logbook, which support participants to develop understanding, practise skills and guide application on the job.
The training took place between September and December 2024 in Sepon Site and Vientiane Office. 265 supervisors across departments completed the training. Participants commented that the course is relevant, practical and support them to perform supervisory roles.
We believe that investing in our supervisors is key to ensuring a safe and productive work environment. A huge thank you to everyone involved in making this training happened and completed.

This commitment is further underscored by LXML's impressive presence on the 108 Jobs website, where it ranks 6th in both follower engagement and the number of followers. The company was honoured with two awards: the Top Follower 2024 Award, recognizing its exceptional follower engagement on 108 Jobs, and the Most Active Employer Award, acknowledging its high volume of job postings.

LXML has made significant investments in human resources development, with a focus on enhancing the skills of its employees. The company has allocated over US$4 million for tertiary scholarships for Lao nationals and over US$680,000 to support training resources at the Savannakhet Vocational School. Since the initiation of these programs, a total of 10,625 trainees have completed training, with over 16,175 training hours delivered by the middle of 2024.
In addition to its investment in training, LXML prioritizes local labor and values its local workforce. The company boasts an impressive 93% ratio of Lao nationals among its approximately 4,000 employees and contractors, with 63% coming from local communities and 25% comprised of women. We are pleased to feature an interview with our graduate metallurgist, Nittayar Louangsombath, who has successfully secured a New Zealand Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in project engineering management.
Nittayar joined LXML in 2022 as a graduate metallurgist, and throughout her tenure, she has consistently advanced her skills and performance. In 2024, she achieved the distinction of being awarded a New Zealand Scholarship. In recognition of her accomplishments, LXML remains committed to supporting her during her studies.
Tell us about your background.
I was born and raised in the countryside. After high school, I decided to pursue studies in mineral processing and mining by supporting myself through part-time jobs. Growing up near mines in my hometown sparked my interest in the field, and I was determined to turn that interest into a career.
When did you start working for LXML, and how did you apply to work here?
I originally interned at Sepon mine during my college studies. That experience left a lasting impression because of the supportive environment and hands-on learning opportunities. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I applied to LXML because I wanted to continue building my career with the team that first inspired me.
What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
One major challenge I faced was realizing that much of the knowledge required for the job wasn’t taught in school. I had to self-study extensively while learning on the job, which required effective time management. By staying disciplined and seeking help from my team whenever needed, I was able to overcome those initial hurdles.
How do you gain new skills and work experience? (Include both opportunities within LXML and externally.)
I’ve gained skills and experience in two keyways. First, I’ve learned a great deal from my team at LXML, whose guidance and expertise have been invaluable. Second, I’ve conducted independent research online and applied that knowledge to my work, especially in project-related tasks. This combination of mentorship and self-initiative has been crucial to my professional growth.
What motivates you in your professional development?
I’m highly motivated by the opportunity to solve problems and challenge myself. Seeing a plan come together successfully brings me great satisfaction and drives me to improve continually. I also enjoy learning new things and expanding my skill set, which makes every project and challenge exciting.
Can you share your experience of successfully applying for a Master of Engineering in Project Management, with financial support from LXML?
I applied for the Master of Engineering in Project Management program through the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship. Once I was accepted, LXML generously offered financial support to help me pursue this opportunity. I am currently in the program and expect to graduate in 2027.
Tell us about your successful application for the New Zealand Award Scholarship (Master of Engineering in Project Management).
I was thrilled to be accepted and grateful for the opportunity to enhance my skills and contribute more effectively to my field. The support from LXML has also been instrumental in making this dream a reality.
What has been your impression of working at Sepon mine?
Working at Sepon mine has been both challenging and rewarding. The experience has allowed me to grow personally and professionally while working alongside a supportive and knowledgeable team. I’ve also gained a deep appreciation for the mining industry in Laos and the collaborative environment at LXML.

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had at LXML and the chance to pursue my master’s degree with LXML support. These experiences have shaped me into a more confident and capable professional. I look forward to continuing to contribute to the company and growing in my career.
